Does Stress Make Your Hair Fall Out?

People regularly underestimate the drastic effects that stress has on the human body. It is also underestimated how much more difficult our lives become when stress levels increase. Stress is seen as a necessary evil in order to get ahead but after a while it can affect your productivity and health to dangerous levels. Losing your hair due to stress is a sign that things are going too far.  


“Why is my hair falling out?” This is the question people ask themselves when they start to see more scalp than hair and maybe start to get patches on the head which are totally bald. People want to look for an extreme reason and of course if you are concerned you should go to your doctor and double check. Women who experience hair loss are particularly susceptible to anxiety and depression due to the hair loss.  


The good news is that usually stress hair loss can be reversed with a few simple steps. To kick start re-growing your hair, keep reading.  


Stress and hair loss are inexorably linked. If you become stressed out for a period of two weeks or more you can start to experience thinning of your hair, more hair lost on your pillow and bald patches. This is a sign that your body is being badly affected by the stress you are under. Wherever this stress is coming from be it work, family or a relationship you need to take action.  



We all like to insist that stress can’t be helped. We all need to do what we have to do. When your body begins to break down however you need to take immediate action.  


Take steps to reduce the stress in your life. This could be getting a new job or getting family and friends to help with babysitting. It could mean restructuring or moving on from a stressful relationship. There will always be some changes you can make, even if the plan to implement these is long term.  


You should also look into controlling how stressed you become. Some people work in extremely stressful jobs and cope, some break apart. The attitudes of people who are less stressed out can be learned. These include not worrying about things you can do nothing about and taking time to enjoy life even if you have problems and important things to do.  


When you become stressed out your diet is likely to suffer; eating on the go, ordering take away or having quick meals at home that take only minutes to prepare. What happens in this case is that the quality of your calories goes down. You may even become malnourished. This nutrient deprivation shows up within a couple of weeks as hair loss. This is noticed when you either have bald patches or a lot of hair falls out with everyday activities such as brushing or styling.  


When you end up in the position where you are stressed and rushed every day you also will end up eating fast food and comfort food more often. Grabbing a cheese Panini as you dash home on a winter’s night may be easy and satisfying but it’s not nutritious in the least.  


When we end up living on fast food our waist lines suffer. Gaining weight when you don’t need or want to is in itself stressful and an example of how stress begets stress. Not taking action to manage stressful times in our lives is a gateway to the situation spiraling downwards. If you resort to junk foods you lose nutrients and gain excess weight.  



This dent in your health means your body has less energy and resources to give you a full head of thick, luscious hair. It has far more important things to do with those nutrients. You may be concerned about your hair falling out but this is just one of the first signs of a poor lifestyle catching up with you.  


What you should absolutely not do is become paranoid about your appearance to the point where you are even more stressed out. Don’t go out and buy overpriced hair re-growth shampoos and quack products, these will not work. All you will do is work yourself up further and become fixated on your appearance. Some people, especially women, have spent so much on products which promise to make their hair grow thicker or longer that they have added financial stress to whatever was making them lose their hair in the first place.  


Opt for a very gentle natural shampoo with no perfume added. This will soothe any irritation that has developed. Get a silk pillow case rather than a cotton one. This will minimize the breakage experienced during the night.  


Manage your stress levels with a two pronged approach; get a less stressful life and work on your ability to not let things get to you. People don’t have “stressy” personalities they just haven’t learned how to cope with stress properly. Take care of your diet and make time to manage your health. Your hair will grow back and if you stick to this approach you’re not going to have hair loss again.  


Seeing hair loss is upsetting and worrying. Rather than interpret this as something that cannot be changed you should realize that it is being caused by stress. Target the stress and don’t let it push you into an unhealthy lifestyle which will only make things worse. Take action and get back control of your life.
